Cervera, capital of Segarra

Nestled on a hill, the city is characterized by narrow streets, sloping neighborhoods and covered alleys, testifying to its defensive past. The intact frameworks of the old ramparts reinforce this impression. In the oldest part are the Gothic temple of Santa María and the Casa de la Villa, marked by its austerity. Further on, the University occupies the space of an old peasant district, while to the north, the presence of the station and warehouses recalls the industrial boom of Cervera in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Sió Castle

The Sió, an unknown river despite its low flow, has played a crucial role in regional history as a natural border, as well as a social, cultural and economic axis. The border castles formed an important defense network in the 10th, 11th and 12th centuries. The Sió takes its source in Gàver, in the Alta Segarra, crosses the Segarra, the Urgell and the Noguera, to finally throw itself near Balaguer after a course of about 70 km. Its course follows exactly the border lines that formed in the region at the turn of the 10th and 11th centuries, creating a distinctive historical and architectural landscape.
